When after reading a history book, something stuck in my mind. A simple question about why history must begin with ancient Greece? Civilization that gave birth to many wise men whose ideas are still quoted by humans in almost all parts of the world until now. The next question arises, whether the ancestors of the Archipelago did not have a civilization full of wise men. There should be, all of his policies vanished in the fog of history. Malignancy when swallowing it all without mercy to leave what is called local policy or local wisdom. All local wisdom comes from oral traditions that do not mention who the speaker is. From here, we know that the size of a civilization that has been constructed in global thought is a paper. One wise ancient man, Herodotus, inherited a simple quote “I write to perpetuate all human actions”. The father of history recorded the events encountered so that his writing is now an important archive. As a result of wise human beings such as Herodutus and other philosophers, who abandoned the writings were the coronation of ancient Greece as the center of the oldest civilizations and intellectuals. The track record of the glory of ancient Greece can be traced thanks to the existence of the archive. Therefore, the archive is a collective memory of the community. The life diary of the community that has been well documented will be able to retell the memories of the past. Elie Wiesel even loudly says “Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future. Elie Wiesel’s expression provides an understanding that memory preservation is very important for the necessity of the existence of identity as a culture, society, civilization and to fill the answers to past questions when it is in the future.
Every individual needs an identity. To get it, they will scrape the memory of their past, as well as society. Individuals and communities are social components that are inseparable, complementary and not opposite. Every human being is part of society so that individual memory is also a memory of society. Community memory consists of a combination of individual memory. So it can also be called collective memory. The term memory originated in ancient Greece, lifted from the name of the mother of nine goddesses, Mnemosin. The mother of nine goddesses describes as the mother of all art. Latin also absorbs it into memorization or he who remembers. According to Fernando Baez, the existence of memory causes the archive text to be seen as cultural patrimonium. This Venezuelan book expert tries to look at the relationship of memory with cultural patrimonium through Historio-Linguistic studies. Patrimonium also comes from the Greek language Padre means Father and the moneo verb which is translated as remembering. Then literally partrimonium means what is remembered by the father. Cultural patrimonium who acts as father and Mnemosin as mother. Cultural patrimonium in the form of libraries, archives and museums while Mnemosin is a storehouse of memory that will give birth to other memory memories. Both are forms of the identity of society, nation, state and civilization. Therefore, preservation of archives that are in accordance with applicable procedures, provisions and rules can be said as an effort to safeguard the identity of society, nation and state with the ultimate goal of building civilization.
The writing tradition is a measure of the progress of civilization. Therefore, writing is a means to contribute to the progress of civilization. The university was established to fight oral traditions while documenting all oral traditions. Meanwhile, oral tradition in the academic world is a symbol of primitiveness or backwardness. So being aware of archives can be a positive behavior that shows the contribution of building civilization. People who are aware of archives understand that archives are their collective memory. Existence and identity and cultural heritage that indicate that they exist. Archives are the pride of the community that has passed. The archive is indeed a proof of attendance. Everyone’s most profound fear is forgotten, as well as what our ancestors felt. The archive prevents its existence from disappearing in the wheel of history.
